WIDE, SHALLOW VLCC'S
The principal dimensions of full form ships such as tankers and bulk carriers is very often limited by factors that may not produce the best formed ships for the transportation task. Thus the size of the building facilities may limit the beam or the length of a building basin may limit length. Other factors such as the lack of resistance data may impose design constraints on length-beam ratio or beam-draft ratio. Extrapolation of present data shows that a VLCC can be built with limited draft, large beam and limited length without causing penalties and maybe incurring gains through its ability to enter U.S. limited draft ports.
