THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HULL SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM
This paper treats the statistical theory used to estimate waveinduced motions and loads on ships. This theory was the basis for the investigation undertaken in connection with the development of a hull surveillance system, i.e. a warning instrument which indicates the dynamic load levels on the ship's hull. The cargoliner M/S TAIMYR was instrumented, and over a period of 1-1/2 year, a series of full scale measurements were carried out. Based on the results obtained from this project the "Hull Load Monitor" system was designed. The "Hull Load Monitor" is based on measured dynamic main stresses in the hull and the vertical acceleration of the bow, all of which are processed by a microprocessor and displayed to the navigator. The navigator thus obtains a measure of the expected load condition the ship will experience in the near future provided the environmental conditions remain unchanged, i.e. the present course, speed and wave-conditions are constant.
