SLOW-SPEED DIESELS FOR LARGE TANKERS

New building and assembly methods and redesigned slow speed diesel engines are bringing diesels an increasing share of the market. The development of engines has been directed toward easier installation, easier maintenance work, longer intervals between overhauls, and complete customer programs. Installation "man-days" have been reduced by 30%. Maintenance cost of piston has been reduced 50%, exhaust valves 90%, and fuel valves 90%. New engines have been stopped only 23 hours per year for maintenance. All improvements have been effected while improving engine fuel rates.
