CHANGE FROM VEHICLE TAX AND TRAFFIC INSURANCE TO TAX ON FUELS FOR CARS. A SOCIOECONOMIC STUDY

OEVERGAANG FRAAN FORDONSSKATT OCH TRAFIKFOERSAEKRING TILL BENSINSKATT FOER PERSONBILAR: EN SAMHAELLSEKONOMISK STUDIE

This work evaluates the socioeconomic effects if society were to abolish the vehicle tax and/or the traffic insurance and instead introduce an extra tax on fuel. Some interesting effects would probably be: (1) welfare loss. The measure makes it more expensive to drive the car and will lead to a decrease in driving. (2) savings in administration. (3) the people who today leave their car untaxed some months of the year will probably use it to some extent all the year and thus contribute to an increase in the income from taxes. These results are built on calculations on petrol driven cars only. The calculations show that society can save up to 95 million sw CR with this reform. (TRRL)
