TRANSIT VEHICLE SPECIFICATIONS MANUAL FOR WESTERN AND INTERIOR ALASKA COMMUNITIES

This Manual is designed to assist interior and western Alaska communities in selecting the transit vehicle and accessories most appropriate to their needs. Vehicle selection criteria--climate, community characteristics, transit operating strategies, and maintenance considerations are covered. The criteria provide a simplified and generalized basis for establishing requirements since no two communities have exactly the same transport problems and transit demand. Vehicle selection is but one part of a complete system planning process. The various types of transit vehicles--standard and modified vans, small and medium buses, large buses, and all-terrain vehicles--are described. The pros and cons of each vehicle category are compared and operator experience in Alaska is discussed. The final section lists manufacturers by vehicle category and gives prices and other information of interest to potential purchasers. Some of the need for public transportation in Alaska is met by taxicabs, but public transit systems have emerged in some larger rural communities and in smaller communities where stretches of road 2 miles or longer connect the airport. A transit vehicle can be used by the community for pupil, senior citizen, regular public and special activity group transportation.
