A PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH FOR THE PORTS INDUSTRY
This paper presents the research program and the priorities assigned to each project by the Standing Committee on Research of the National Ports Council of England. Additional bodies currently represented on the Committee are the British Ports Association, Chamber of Shipping, British Shippers Council, Transport and General Workers Union, National Association of Port Employers, Department of the Environment, and Department of Trade and Industry. Under this Committee's guidance a special survey was made of areas of most critical need. From this survey a detailed program has been developed. Four basic areas have been defined as follows: Area A--Nautical Research dealing with the wet side of harbor operations; Area B--Harbor Structures dealing with reclamation, dredging, berthing forces and paved areas; Area C--Dock Operations and Design featuring the designing of structures around operations; Area D--Research Aids and Planning Control directed toward corporate planning and management information control.
