SHELL LAUNCHES SINGLE-BUOY MOORING FOR NORTH SEA'S AUK FIELD

A single-point mooring system, specially designed for North Sea operations, is described. This Exposed Location Single Buoy Mooring incorporates several new technical features designed to cope with oil-loading problems in the rough North Sea waters. The mooring has a helicopter deck and living quarters for maintenance men, and the superstructure below the living quarters includes machinery to operate the unreeling of two flexible hose pipes, one on each side of the mooring. The main body of the buoy is made up of two sections, the fender structure and the hull below, and elements of each section are briefly described. Loading operations are said to be able to take place in 12 foot seas, with a current of 1.5 knots, and winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour.
