POSITION SYSTEM AIDS DREDGING
The importance of highly accurate positional information systems on board dredges cannot be minimized. Knowing exactly where the dredge is at all times lessens the possibility of overdredging and reduces wear and tear on machinery. Several positioning systems are described, and reasons for their unacceptability for dredging work are given. The author then describes a microwave direct ranging system with an accuracy of plus or minus one meter. The elements that compose the system are briefly described, with reasons given for their selection and mode of operation, and capabilities that can be added to the original system are also stated.
