ON THERMAL STRESSES IN BEAMS

Elementary calculations for the axial thermal stresses in beams are compared with those of an exact theory, and estimates of the difference between the two are given for several important special cases, including that of thin-walled beams. It is found that the error in the elementary theory is quite large in certain cases (for example that of a circular section with axisymmetric temperature). (Author)
