The behaviour of rejuvenated SBS-modified asphalt incorporating catalytic-reactive compounded rejuvenator

A novel catalytic-reactive compounded rejuvenator containing aromatic oil (AO), epoxidised soybean oil (ESO) and triphenyl phosphine (TPP, catalyst) was developed to rejuvenate aged SBS-modified asphalt (SBSMA).Three types of rejuvenator (AO, AO/ESO, AO/ESO(TPP)) were employed to rejuvenate long-term aged SBSMA. The results show that 10 wt% AO can obviously improve the physical properties of SBSMA. Besides, when the proportion of AO to ESO(TPP) is 50%:50%, the ductility of SBSMA can be enhanced significantly while its high-temperature performance is guaranteed. The binder rejuvenated by AO/ESO(TPP) has better high- and low-temperature performances than that rejuvenated by AO/ESO. In Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test, a new 1116 cm−¹ peak appears in the spectra of rejuvenated binder (50%AO/50%ESO(TPP)), indicating that TPP can open the epoxy groups and the opened epoxy groups are able to polymerise with aged SBS molecules. In Gel permeation chromatography test, the increase of SBS peak indicates that the degraded SBS was repaired.
