REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMISSION
This report of the International Commission for Study of Motorbuses has continued its investigations of the technical aspects of urban and interurban buses. Revisions of existing recommendations for Class I (urban) buses include maximum vehicle length now 12 m; wheelbase 5.5 to 6.3 m; minimum standing headroom of 2.1 m; floor as low as possible (no higher than 725 mm); higher and more streamlined windshields; and more effective lighting and ventilation. Class II (interurban) buses would also have longer wheelbase and greater headroom, floor no higher than 860 mm, smaller number of doors, and greater life with reduced servicing requirements. It is recommended that standardization of national regulations having to do with the construction of motorbuses would enhance safety. New recommendations were made with reference to passenger seats including static and dynamic forces, seat structure, seat anchorages and seat safety. Another recommendation has to do with transportation of handicapped passengers with the conclusion that wheelchair passengers best be transported by special services. Because trolley buses cause little noise and emit no exhaust, perform well on grades and offer a good alternative to motorbuses, suggestions are offered for their design.
