INVOLVEMENT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. AN INQUIRY

ENKAETUNDERSOEKNING OM TRAFIKOLYCKOR BLAND SKOLBARNEN

The aim of this report is to investigate the involvement of school children in traffic accidents. 2057 pupils filled in a questionnaire. 266 (12,9%) of them had at least once been involved in an accident. Results show that (1) the most accident prone ages are 9-11, (2) the accident rate has increased compared to 1979 and 1980, (3) boys are more often involved in accidents than girls, (4) most of the accidents occur in leisure time and in daylight and (5) legs, arms and heads are the parts of the body most frequently injured, except for car passengers where head injuries dominate. Remarkably many boys have been involved in a moped accident before they were 15 years old, ie before they are allowed to drive mopeds. (TRRL)
