TRAFFIC SAFETY POLICY OF LOCAL AUTHORITIES

GEMEENTELIJK VERKEERSVEILIGHEID BELEID

Each city has to deal with the lack of traffic safety; insecurity in traffic is a severe social burden with 2000 fatalities and 60000 injured road users per year. The prevention and limitation of accidents and the treatment of injuries should be the concern of local authorities, and fear due to lack of traffic safety is a subject of care to public authorities. The battle against lack of safety in traffic is an aspect which connects many fields in local policies, e.g., town planning, traffic education in schools, traffic management schemes, reconstruction and redivision of residential areas, resurfacing and first aid to traffic victims. The aim of this publication is to assist local authorities in their approach, and in particular to study which activities can be developed in the field of traffic safety, using rules already existing and procedures on organizational and financial means. Many examples of implemented measures are presented. (TRRL)
