ASSESSMENT OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT NEEDS FOR METHANE FUELED ENGINE SYSTEMS
The most significant technical, economic and institutional problems which have limited the use of natural gas as a fuel for stationary and mobile engines were identified and a research and development plan which would, if successful, resolve them was prepared. Problem identification was carried out through a mail canvass of equipment suppliers, vehicle operators, gas utilities and government organizations plus personal interviews with a number of the respondents. Current and planned research and development programs to develop improved equipment for use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a vehicle fuel were reviewed.
