MARINE BOILER DEVELOPMENT OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS
Reviews difficulties experienced by available marine boiler designs ten years ago showing now, in the face of improvement obtained with slow speed Diesel, steam propulsion came close to extinction. Means of reducing boiler problems are considered along with the influence of parallel development of combustion systems. Reference is made to changes in trading patterns involving the introduction of high shaft power not readily available except from steam turbines. Combined efforts of steam plant designers produced advanced technology plant for reheat steam propulsion machinery, the spin-off from which has resulted in the modern marine radiant boiler showing itself capable of avoiding the difficulties prevalent ten years ago. Finally, the possibilities of further advances are mentioned, particularly in the field of co-operation between designers and suppliers of steam plant, shipowners and shipbuilders, with the object of improving reliability in the overall sense.
