SUPERCONDUCTIVE NAVAL PROPULSION SYSTEMS
First in importance for many ship concepts is to provide long range at cruise speed while retaining capability for high-speed sprints for short periods. This article studies the effects of turbine combinations on the cruising range and top speed of a hypothetical 400 foot, twin-screw attack vessel of 1500 ton fuel capacity, two 3500 hp, 9000 rpm gas turbines and four 25,500 hp, 3600 rpm machines are assumed to be operable in any combination, cross-connectible to the two screws.
