SMOKE EXTRACTING GUNS BEAT GENERAL VENTILATION
A report presented at the International Welding Fair in Essen, Germany, last October, cited smoke extracting gun systems to be one of the most economical and effective means for improving the semiautomatic and automatic arc welding environment. These findings were based on tests conducted by Osaka Denki Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, with the assistance of the Japan Industrial Safety Association. The smoke extracting gun systems used were Models L, M and P, manufactured by the Bernard Division of the Dover Corporation, Beecher, Illinois. The conclusions reached were as follows: Although it is possible to improve the welding shop environment with an updraft or laminar flow system, this equipment is extremely large and costly; while smoke extracting guns, which provide local ventilation, have proved to be less cumbersome, more economical, and remarkably more effective.
