SPINAL CORD INJURY

Patients with spinal injuries should be taken care of from the very acute stage in specialized spinal centres within the general rehabilitation departments at university hospitals. Good care from the first stage will reduce thromboses, bed sores, urinary tract infections, orthotic symptoms by early mobilization, osteoporosis, muscle contractures and also give a quick restoration of muscle strength in non-paretic muscles and improve physical and mental condition. A review is given of new methods, some developed at the University of Gothenburg as respiratory treatment by a special insufflation method and surgical intervention on the arm and hand in tetraplegia, given stretch function of the elbow and grip function of the paralyzed hand.
