A RESEARCH PROGRAMME OF THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT OF URBAN BUS DRIVERS IN DENMARK

The research programme consisted of five partial programmes, e.g: (1) a combined study of absenteeism, disability and death over a five year period ranging from 1972 to 1977, (2) a description of the work and the environment based on historical matters, ranging from 1962 to 1978, (3) a cross-sectional study of psychosocial factors, (4) a cross-sectional study of health, including a clinical examination, and (5) a study of noise, vibration, climate, air pollution and ergonomics in buses. Absenteeism was found to be 2-3 times greater among the Copenhagen bus drivers when compared with bus drivers of a smaller transit company in Odense. In nearly all the investigated psychosocial fields, the work of bus drivers was found to be dominated by strains on health as well as well-being. Clinical examinations (based on random samples) showed that bus drivers were more frequently ill when comparing with different reference groups. (TRRL)
