THE SUPPLY OF FUELS
DRIVMEDELSFOERSOERJNING
Present policy in Sweden is that dependence on oil must be reduced and safeguards for maintenance of supplies must be increased. About 30 M M 3 petroleum products are used annually in Sweden, of which petrol is about 5 M M3. The choice of an alternative motor fuel is determined not only by the degree of dependence on oil based products, but costs must also be approximately comparable. A new fuel must be easy to handle, be capable of use alongside petrol and diesel, fit into existing distribution systems, and preferably be capable of use in existing engines, produce higher efficiency and improvements from environmental and health viewpoints. Possible alternative fuels are (1) methanol and ethanol, (2) synthetic hydrocarbons, (3) gaseous fuels, (4) increased production of petrol and diesel by changed refinery processes, (5) entirely new fuels/engines. Ethanol can be produced from agricultural products, but in wartime there may be no excess of these available. Methanol can be made from CO and H at a comparable price; distribution and handling are however difficult. Introduction of petrol mixed with 15% methanol must be investigated from viewpoint of health and safety legislation. Powdered fuels are efficient, but environmentally detrimental. Solar cells etc are still in development state. (TRRL)
