FORGING A PUBLIC-PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERSHIP THAT SUPPORTS STATION AREA DEVELOPMENT: IMPACT OF THE NORTHEAST CORRIDOR PROJECT ON A KEY STATE
The major impetus behind the Northeast Corridor Improvement Project in New Jersey is the federal financial commitment to the cities. Paralleling this support is the Governor's policy to renew and rebuild New Jersey's cities. The New Jersey Department of Transport is applying innovative approaches to the development and redevelopment of both land and transport systems, and involves a positive outlook on the private sector. It is noted that the key to successful economic development includes not only cooperation with the private sector, but also the adoption of private sector attitudes such as risk-taking and the entrepreneurial spirit. Service operational improvements on existing lines must be a part of the public-sector contribution. The higher the level of high-speed service to any one stop, the greater the incentive for the private sector to invest in station area development at that stop.
