NEW VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT METHODS
In recent years there have been strong social demands for resource and energy conservation, and the intensified competition in the global automotive market has made it necessary to continually upgrade product competitiveness. These technical tasks, which the design development department must shoulder, cannot easily be accomplished with the product development approaches used heretofore. Accordingly, an effort has been made to utilize the latest computer technology as a powerful tool in the product development process. To this end, various computer application systems have been developed and a data base has been established for the engineering departments. Furthermore, by integrating the computer facilities, it has been possible to rationalize development methods and made them more efficient. Typical computer applications include optimization of structural designs through structural analysis, performance predictions based on computer simulation, CAD, laboratory automation, and the computerization of the administrative work in the design development department. The utilization of computer technology has achieved significant results in the way of reducing vehicle weight, improving designed quality and performance, and lowering product costs, among other benefits. This paper describes the current status for the application of computer technology in design development at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. as well as tasks that will be tackled in the coming years.
