AUTOMATIC CODING OF SURVEY ADDRESSES

One of the more time-consuming and expensive aspects of undertaking travel surveys is allocating zone codes or some other geographical reference to the address information collected. The conventional approach is to employ a large number of coders and code each interview as it comes. This is an expensive, lengthy, error prone process. This paper describes an alternative approach which substantially reduces the time, costs and errors of coding. This is based on a computer coding technique known as the Automatic Matching Program (AMP). This paper concentrates on the problems associated with address matching and the techniques incorporated in AMP to solve these problems. By reference to case examples, the benefits of computerised address coding are illustrated. (TRRL)
