NORWEGIAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE OPERATION OF DYNAFLECT

Each road district in Norway now operates its own Dynaflect for bearing capacity measurements. (one district operates a Lacroix deflectograph.) The Dynaflects have replaced the Benkelman beam as a general tool for bearing capacity measurements. The first Dynaflects were bought in 1975/76 to be used in the general survey of the main road network (25000 km). The Dynaflects are now used for updating of the bearing capacity register, for administration of axle load restrictions and for strengthening evaluations. The dynaflects have often arrived in a rather poor condition, obviously lacking a final checking before leaving the producer. These defects are however rapidly cleared (1-2 days) and the routine operation of the Dynaflect is carried out with few breakdowns. With a well organized maintenance routine a near trouble free operation is achieved. The basic construction of the Dynaflect is simple. Some parts (brakes, axle) are, however, unsatisfactory and are replaced by better parts in Norway, following 2-5 years of operation. Reasons for breakdown are mainly cable cut-offs or contact failures. The experience gained in Norway with 18 Dynaflects in operation is generally good and if new equipment should have been ordered today, by freely choosing among the equipment being on the market, it is probable that the same equipment would have been chosen.
