MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF DAMAGED ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

Recently, asphalt pavement damages due to heavy traffic are becoming great concern in Japan. The authors dealt with rutting damages of major roads by means of multivariate analysis, considering various factors on pavement bearing capacity and environmental condition. Based on an examination of technical papers which were published in the past ten years and reference to rutting damages of asphalt pavements, the factors related to asphalt pavement damages were selected. For environmental factors, the following factors were chosen: "years of traffic", "total vehicles per day", "commercial vehicles per day" and "location of site". For bearing capacity, the following factors were chosen: "type of asphalt mixture", "thickness of asphalt mixture", "thickness of base course" and "CBR of subgrade". The authors applied multivariate analysis to the factors and evaluated them. The regression equation presented in this paper can be used to estimate the amount of rutting in asphalt pavements.
