FALLING WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER (FWD) MEASUREMENTS ON GRAVEL ROADS

Since 1979 the Swedish National Road and Traffic Research Institute (VTI) has made FWD measurements on some gravel roads and roads with single surface treatment with graded gravel aggregate (y1g) in the County of Ostergoetland. The object is to contribute to an overlay design method for gravel roads and y1g roads. In this paper some of the results of these measurements are briefly presented. The seasonal variation of the deflection and the variation in the transverse as well as the longitudinal direction of the road are studied. Samples of the material in the road were taken and regression analyses are performed to study the correlation between deflections and pavement properties. Deflections in y1g-sections in good condition and sections showing some deterioration are also compared. (a) (TRRL)
