RAIL-TRUCK INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION: 1981
Few areas in the transportation sector have experienced more dramatic change or provoked a more heightened awareness of its promise than the rail-truck sector of intermodal transportation. Deregulation, availability and cost of fuel, technology developments, and shipper and carrier desire to improve the efficiency of goods movement are all contributing elements in the current interest. Research and reporting have both documented the progress and advanced the understanding of the potential of the intermodal concept. To assist managers in this field and to keep researchers abreast of current published materials, a Task Force of the Committee on Intermodal Freight Transport of the Transportation Research Board has prepared an annotated bibliography of research completed or published in 1981. In all, 36 items have been included. It is anticipated that annual updates will be made to the bibliography to ensure a central source of information on rail-truck intermodal topics. Both subject content and organization of materials for this rail-truck intermodal transportation bibliography are designed to serve a special-interest audience. Citations therefore were grouped under the following subtopics to aid the user in locating material: General References and Statistics, Equipment, Financial Program and Results, Institutional, Management, Marketing, Operation Program and Results, and Terminals. A brief discussion of what is included under each topic area appears on page vi. Each section is arranged alphabetically by individual or corporate author. Because of the range of content in various publications, entries may appear in more than one section. The citation is in standard format and is followed by a brief description of the document's contents. Members of the intermodal bibliography committee summarized the major issue(s), findings and conclusions covered by the report, and provided some account of specific information to be found in the documents. In many cases, an author or agency abstract has also been used, in whole or part. (Author'
