In development work and problem solving, it is frequently necessary to instrument bearing systems of installed machines operating in field; suggestions to follow and pitfalls to avoid in making various bearing system measurements, such as pressure, temperature, film thickness, flow, and load; also discussed are bearing assembly and operation of recording equipment under adverse conditions; tests conducted on board ship are given as examples.
