PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE SECTION 147 RURAL TRANSPORTATION DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM
The Rural Transportation Demonstration Program, enacted into law in 1973, was the first federal program to provide substantial funds for rural transportation. The demonstration program clearly showed the need for federal assistance to rural transportation, as evidenced by the subsequent amendment of the Urban Mass Transportation Act, which amendment authorized appropriations for transportation through Section 18. The highlights of the demonstration program and the lessons learned from other rural transportation operators and program administrators are also discussed in this paper. (Author)
