A LOOK AT THE FUTURE

Highway research programs should give priority to the development of ways to implement and evaluate existing technology. Programs that need reinforcement should continue as prime research prospects. Obtaining the lowest maintenance cost and considering the maintainability of a roadway feature should be of prime concern. Research is needed in the design of facilities that will ensure the maintainability of the end product. There is need for research of better ways and materials to patch potholes, mow grass, repair signs, etc. The researchers could develop a forum of practicing maintenance engineers who would evaluate and rate techniques. Researchers should develop training programs for maintenance supervisors and workers that would help them in operating the highway system. Research is needed to make surveillance, control and driver information systems on urban freeways relatively maintenance free. Semipermanent guidance systems that can withstand extremes of weather, and striping materials that will retain reflectivity in all weather are also needed.
