PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT: PROCEEDINGS OF NATIONAL WORKSHOPS

In May and September 1980 two three-day national workshops were used as forums to assemble, present, appraise and evaluate all pertinent information and practices covering the broad field of pavement management processes. The primary objectives of the workshops were to define the pavement management process in terms of the logical sequence of involved activities; identify and describe those activities needed to improve and promote the concept; and formulate and recommend a national program of short- and long-term activities to be pursued by the Federal Highway Administration and other appropriate organizations. This report contains the proceedings of the two workshops. This report states that there is sufficient technology to implement pavement management activities now. To ensure widespread implementation the workshop participants developed a number of recommendations which take the form of informational and promotional activities, educational efforts and demonstration endeavors. Some studies are required to improve the pavement management process including the development of improved user cost data and improved prediction models for pavement performance resulting from both load and environmentally related factors. Benefits associated with improved pavement management are identified.
