THE OVERALL EFFECT ON ACCIDENTS AT SITES WHERE ZEBRA CROSSINGS WERE INSTALLED
This paper describes a study which was initiated to quantify the effects on accidents of the installation of Zebra crossings. It is known that the average annual rate of accidents at or within 50 metres of a Zebra in London is about 2.5 and this was used as a base for creating three distinct groups of sites, viz. those with less than 2 accidents per year, those with 2-3 accidents per year, and those with more than 3 accidents per year. This gave groups of low, average and high accident rates respectively. The second stage of the study investigated the same sites when they were categorised by P (V squared) and the "before" and "after" accidents were again analysed.
