MassDOT-FHWA Pilot Project Report: Climate Change and Extreme Weather Vulnerability Assessments and Adaptation Options for the Central Artery

On January 23, 2013, the project team submitted a proposal to the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA's) request for Pilot Projects: Climate Change and Extreme Weather Vulnerability Assessments and Adaptation Analysis Options program. Funding was awarded by FHWA in February 2013 and Notice to Proceed was issued by MassDOT on April 16, 2013. The objectives of this pilot project were to 1) assess the vulnerability of Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T) to sea level rise (SLR) and extreme storm events, and 2) investigate and present adaptation options to reduce identified vulnerabilities. The results of these two project objectives support a third objective, still on-going, to establish an emergency response plan for tunnel protection and/or shut down in the event of a major storm.
