LASER LINE-UP BEAMS TUNNELS ON COURSE
Lasers for tunnel boring machine (TBM) alignment have been used by tunnel engineers for many years but their full potential has not been extensively explored. One explanation may be the laser's initial cost. Also, a number of misunderstandings and myths have arisen as to just what the laser is capable of, the way in which it behaves and what it can be used for. This article discusses a development in which the passive use of lasers for tunnel alignment has now been complemented by a more active application involving computer guidance of TBMs with automatic correction of directional errors.
