LASERS USED IN SWEDISH SURFACE TESTER
A laser-based system for measuring the roughness of pavement surfaces has been developed and tested extensively in Sweden for establishing priorities in road repairs. Following successful use by the Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute (VTI), the system will be introduced to the United States and Canada through a series of seminars and demonstrations in early 1983. The new testing vehicle provides continuous non-contact measurement of several variables, including road cross profiles and rut depth, longitudinal profiles (profiles in the direction of travel) and surface texture. Measurements can be made on all surfaces from black asphalt to concrete, in all seasons (during daylight or darkness) and under all traffic conditions.
