DUAL-FUEL--THE CHOICE IS A FINE ONE

The article evaluates the economics of a dual-fuel conversion of a delivery van enabling it to operate on lpg as well as petrol. At motorway cruising speeds of 100km/hr the 1700cc-engined vehicle achieved a fuel consumption of 10.35lit/100km while running on petrol so giving an operating cost of 4.15p/km. While running on lpg the vehicle achieved a 10 per cent increase in fuel consumption although with the fuel's lower cost the resulting operating cost was 3.23p/km. Against this saving must be set the cost of the lpg installation given as about found325. This level of saving would give a break-even point of some 35000km to recoup the cost. An advantage of this installation is the combined range offered by the petrol and lpg tanks. Although lpg burns more cleanly than petrol any resulting saving from its use is solely dependant upon the maintenance of the present differential. (Author/TRRL)
