THE BMW ETA ENGINE CONCEPT

The paper shows that by suitable design the petrol engine is able to compete with the diesel in terms of operating efficiency and cost. Examining BMW engine developments in particular, in order to ensure efficient combustion compression ratios between 10:1 and 13:1 are needed depending on the type of fuel used. In future engine designs it is planned to optimise compression ratios of the company's engines by the use of compact combustion chambers, minimisation of production tolerances, and exact control of ignition timing. Compared with the trend of making engines as small as possible, for a specific model performance, the concept of the BMW ETA engine is to provide the power required under all running conditions at lower engine speeds and with correspondingly higher torque. The objective is therefore to constantly run the engine with maximum efficiency in the most effective specific work/speed range. The article defines the design features of the ETA engine concept and compares its cost and efficiency with that of the diesel engine. (Author/TRRL)
