POTENTIAL FUEL SAVINGS OF GENERAL-FREIGHT CARRIERS OPERATING UNDER BRIDGE FORMULA B GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT LIMITS

The number of gallons of diesel fuel that could be saved if 65-ft twin-trailer operations were permitted to operate under state weight limits designated on the basis of Bridge Formula B is estimated. This formula, developed by the American Association of State Transportation and Highway Officials, would only be applied to 65-ft twin-trailer operations and would permit them to operate at up to 85500-lb gross weight as opposed to the arbitrary ceiling of 80000 lb now established as the federal limit. The analysis indicates that application of Bridge Formula B to define the gross vehicle weight limit of 65-ft twin-trailer operations would save the United States 229,927,000 gal of diesel fuel annually.
