THE DEVICE FOR THE MEASURING OF THE THICKNESS AND THE CROSS PROFILE OF THE ROAD SURFACING

TIEN PAALLYSTEEN PAKSUUDEN JA POIKKIPROFIILIN MITTAUSLAITE

Different methods for the non-destructive measurement of the thickness of the wearing course of asphalt pavements were studied. The best solution turned out to be the inductive method which incorporates aluminium foil laid under the wearing course during its construction. An instrument was designed to measure besides the thickness, the profile of the road surface, gradient of the surface and the position of the foil under the wearing course. By theoretical study and by practical tests the influence of ambient conditions was minimised. The accuracy of measurement is typically 1 mm. Features of the instrument are the continuous measurement of the thickness and the ability to express the profile compared to the horizontal plane. (TRRL)
