STANDARD DEFINITIONS FOR ROAD ACCIDENTS

For a considerable number of years efforts have been made to obtain national traffic accident statistics in Australia. On many occasions various organizations and enquiries have lamented the lack of detailed accident data for the whole of Australia. Early attempts to achieve uniform accident data from the states were based on promoting a standard report form. Recently a set of common core data items to be collected in each state (not necessarily on the report form) has been prepared by ACRUPTC (Advisory Committee on Road User Performance and Traffic Codes) and endorsed by ATAC (Australian Transport Advisory Council). Included with the common core data items were some definitions. The items were endorsed by ATAC in July 1977; what is the status as regards adoption by each state today? Are the proposed definitions a complete set to really achieve uniform statistics at any level of severity? Do the data items permit any real depth of investigation? Do they satisfy the expressed demands for data for road safety research on a national basis? What other items and definitions could be added? (Author/TRRL)
