LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

This report describes the design and construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Technical data are presented on the total length of the expressway and bridge works, cross-section, earthworks and pavement design. The road was officially opened to traffic on the 8th August 1978. In September 1978 serious pavement failure occurred in the form of cracks, potholes, deformations, pushings and ruttings. As a result, an investigation was carried out to determine the causes of failure, adequacy of pavement design, and the quality of the materials used both in the failed and unfailed sections of the road. The results showed the causes of failure to be heavy axle loads, lack of subsoil drainage, use of sub-standard materials. The remedial measures taken are described. (Author/TRRL)
