Safety Effects of Roundabout Conversions in Carmel, Indiana, the Roundabout City

Carmel, Indiana has a large number of roundabouts and drivers there are familiar with navigating them. This study looks at crash rates before and after 64 conventional intersections were converted to roundabouts in Carmel. It examines three different types of roundabouts: single-lane, multilane, and teardrop. The largest impact was a reduction in total crash rates by 63% for the double-teardrop roundabout. Conversion to single-lane roundabout resulted in a 51% decrease in total crashes. Conversion to multilane roundabout saw increases in total and property-damage-only crashes and the authors discuss possible reasons for this. In addition, the report looks in more detail at intersection characteristics pre-conversion and crash severity outcome (injury crash, property-damage-only crashes).
