Motorcycle Antilock Braking Systems and Fatal Crash Rates: Updated Results
This report compares fatal crash rates, 2003-2019, for motorcycles with and without antilock braking systems (ABS). Sixty five motorcycle models (10 different types of motorcycle) were examined that offer both an ABS version and a non-ABS version. It was found that per 10,000 registered vehicles, ABS was associated with a 22% reduction in motorcycle driver fatal crash rates. Fatality rates per 10,000 registered vehicle years was 5.7 for ABS motorcycles compared with 7.4 for non-ABS motorcycles.
