PROGRESS IN RAILWAY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
This report covers worldwide developments in passenger cars, transit commuter cars, and locomotives. Despite 1964 legislation, most developments have been made outside the U. S. Passenger equipment includes Canadian (Bombardier) trains for Amtrak for operation in the Northeast Corridor, French and Norwegian passenger cars. Transit commuter cars described include those designed for the Danish and Swedish state railways, the Odakyo Electric Railway, the Brazilian State Railway in Greater Rio de Janeiro, Washington Metro Transit cars developed by Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie of Italy, a computer-controlled, lightweight, ultraquiet train run by linear induction motors, developed and built by Urban Transportation Development Corp of Toronto, Canada, also light rail vehicle designs from West Germany and Japan. Among locomotives, diesel designs described include General Electric and Electro-Motive of the U.S., and Bombardier, Brown Boveri, Toshiba and others. Electric locomotives are being ordered by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Norway, Netherlands, and Belgium.
