COMFORT AND HANDABILITY OF BICYCLE HELMETS
CYKELHJAELMARS KOMFORT OCH HANTERBARHET
In this project six bicycle helmets have been evaluated regarding comfort and handling by sixteen experienced cyclists who used them daily to and from work. The helmets have also been assessed as to how they affected bicycle manoeuvring or the possibility to detect surrounding traffic. After the tests the cyclists were allowed to keep the helmet they preferred and one year later they were interviewed about helmet usage. The results show that none of the tested helmets had satisfactory properties regarding comfort and handling and only two of the sixteen cyclists did regularly use the helmet after a year. It is pointed out that improvements should be concentrated on locks, fit, ventilation and weight in order to make cyclists wear the helmets more frequently. (TRRL)
