NO DROP IN INCIDENCE OF TRAFFIC INJURIES AMONG CHILDREN AS CAR PASSENGERS

INGEN NEDGAANG I TRAFIKSKADEINCIDENS VAD GAELLER BARN SOM BILPASSAGERARE

In recent years the number killed and injured in traffic accidents in Sweden has decreased. As far as children are concerned, there has been an improvement among pedestrians, while children who are car passengers run about the same risk as ten years ago. A survey has been carried out by Malmo County Council into injuries sustained by children under 15 in traffic accidents who were subsequently admitted to hospital in Skane Province. It has been found that during the 1970's the number of annual hospital days for children injured in car accidents in Skane was about 2300. National statistics show that this type of accident is responsible for almost 50% of all hospitalisation after traffic injuries among children of 1-14, while most other traffic injuries result from cycle accidents. There is thus scope for preventive action within the framework of child care. The survey shows that a general drop in incidence of traffic injuries in recent years does not apply to children travelling in cars. This group is the largest one among children injured in car accidents. This is very probably due to the fact that very few children in cars use seat belts or child seats. This should be counteracted by publicity. (TRRL)
