CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE LIGHTING OF CYCLE TRACKS

OVERWEGINGEN TOT HET VERLICHTEN VAN FIETSPADEN

The increasing interest in cycling and the critical attitude of today's cyclists induce the authorities to expand and improve cycling facilities. Their poor quality and the resulting lack of safety become more and more obvious, in particular at dusk and by night when the cyclist is even more dependent on the recognizability of the surroundings. More often than not the lighting from his own bicycle will then not be sufficient. This lighting also serves as a signal for the cyclist to be seen by other road users. However, in heavy traffic, when the light from bicycles is drowned in the much more glaring light from cars this signal function is of little use. In natural darkness the contours of cycle-paths can be discerned reasonably well by bicycle-light alone, but only if the cyclists do not get dazzled by oncoming traffic or confused by other light sources. In those cases additional public lighting could be a supporting asset. Research has been done into the minimum acceptable level of lighting (allowing safe and unhampered cycling) by making experiments. (TRRL)
