LIGHT REFLECTION AND COMPOSITION OF ROAD SURFACES

LICHTREFLECTIE EN SAMENSTELLING VAN WEGDEKKEN

The shape of the reflection indicatrix of a road surface may be characterized by two independent parameters p(2;0) and p(1;90), the size of the indicatrix may be accounted for by employing the luminance coefficient qp as a scale factor. From a photometric point of view road surfaces are to be preferred for which p(2;0) is less than or equal to 0.4 and qp is greater than or equal to 0.08 cd/sq m-2.lux-1 because, on the one hand, of their relatively large mean road luminance in combination with a favourable uniformity of road luminance at public lighting and, on the other hand, of their relatively high luminance yield at automobile headlighting. The paper finally deals with the relationship between reflection properties and composition of top layers. Cement concrete top layers and asphalt concrete top layers with at least 30% of the total mineral aggregate consisting of white chippings, conform to the requirements of photometric preference.
