ROAD LIGHTING OUTSIDE URBAN AREAS: WHAT VISUAL INFORMATION IS NECESSARY FOR THE DRIVER?
WEGVERLICHTING BUITEN DE BEBOUWDE KOM: WELKE VISUELE INFORMATIE HEEFT DE AUTOMOBILIST NODIG?
Two exploratory studies were conducted on the visual information that is of essential importance for car driving at night outside built-up areas. A tentative conclusion is that seeing the geometrical road characteristics (e.g. course of the road, crossings) is often much more problematic than seeing other road users, or possible objects on the road surface. Therefore public lighting should, if no slow traffic is present, specially be directed at improving the visibility of geometrical road characteristics. (Author/TRRL)
