THE ENTRANCE AREAS OF TUNNELS HAVE THE HIGHEST ACCIDENT RATE; THE MIDDLE ZONE IS SAFEST IN SPITE OF RISKY DRIVING

TUNNELPORTALENE MEST ULYKKESBELASTET; MIDTSONEN TRYGGEST TROSS RISIKOFYLT KJOERING

Traffic accidents in connection with tunnels seem to happen mostly in the tunnel entrance area, in spite of risky driving within the tunnel. An examination recently performed at SINTEF/NTH (Norwegian Institute of Technology) shows that 45 percent of the accidents took place in the transition areas, while 22 percent took place inside the tunnel. The rest of the accidents occurred outside the tunnel. The aim of this article is to direct attention to the dangers which can arise in connection with driving in tunnels. The analysis is based on recorded traffic accidents and traffic technical measurements in tunnels. (TRRL)
